Andrew Dickeson’s Blue Rhythm Band
Andrew Dickeson’s Blue Rhythm Band is a band for dancers. They do what Basie did. They play four solid beats to the bar and no cheating! This is a solid small band built from the rhythm section out, made by jazz musicians for ultimate jazz fans. The Blue Rhythm Band has impressed dancers at the Little Big Weekend, Jazz with Ramona, the Small Ball, and Jazz BANG.
The most important part of a dance band is the rhythm section. A solid bass player, a drummer who knows when to step back, a pianist who can be either rhythm or melody.
Andrew Dickeson… band leader drummer, teacher, and jazz history scholar at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney. Known for his crisp, hard-swinging style, Andrew has been one of the foremost drummers on the Australian jazz scene for over 25 years. Andrew is one of Australia’s most prominent, prolific and accomplished musicians. He played and studied here in Australia before spending time in New York playing and studying with jazz legends Art Taylor, Vernel Fournier and more recently Michael Carvin. He has worked with a great many American jazz stars and appears on around 100 CDs. Andrew is in constant demand in Australia and overseas and has recently released his long-awaited CD “Weaver of Dreams” which is receiving outstanding reviews and is available at www.andrewdickeson.com.
Peter Locke is one of Australia’s top jazz pianists with an impressive depth of the Jazz Tradition in his playing. He has toured the USA several times and few musicians could move so seamlessly from interpretations of the works of Bix Beiderbecke and Duke Ellington to BeBop and beyond. Brendan Clarke is a premier Australian bassist with incredible style and experience. Since winning the prestigious Wangaratta Jazz Festival Award 2001 Brendan’s career has gone ahead in leaps and bounds. He has appeared at all the major Australian jazz festivals, played bass on over 50 albums and has undertaken several tours of Europe.
If the rhythm section is the engine that drives the band, the brass and reeds are the colour and light. Brad Child’s solid presence in the front row on sax and clarinet, as well as vocals, make it clear that a good dance band needs to match rhythm with melody. Brad has been a fixture on the Sydney jazz scene for 30 years, performing as a leader and side man at a myriad of festivals and clubs in Australia and abroad. Trumpet player Todd Hardy is the icing on the cake to make this band the ultimate swing dance experience. Todd is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has been performing professionally for over 20 years in Australia as well as undertaking numerous tours to Europe and Asia.
This is a spectacular lineup of dazzlingly talented musicians and Jumptown Swing is extremely excited to bring you this incredible band for your swing dancing pleasure on the Saturday night of the Jam!
